Lesson Plan: Calculating Clothing Combinations

I'm not crazy about math. Because I don't like it, I really want to help other kids who don't like it understand it better, so that they will have more success than I did, and thus grow to enjoy it more. I especially want to help female students with this, since math and science are such male-dominated areas of study!
This is a lesson I created by combing several different methods for teaching the same idea: calculating combinations. In this activity, I focused on calculating clothing combinations, but these methods can be applied to calculating combinations of anything! I love the idea of teaching the same concept in various ways, because I know when I was in school there would be times I wouldn't understand a lesson at all, but as soon as it was taught in a different way it would suddenly make sense! I did this lesson with a class, and at the end I let them choose which method to use for their paper dolls. It was a lot of fun, because everybody got to choose what worked best for them, and everybody got to pick out their own set of paper doll clothes. In my class, I may alter this lesson by letting them make their own paper dolls to look like them, for example. The possibilities are endless!

I found some really awesome websites for this lesson plan:
http://illuminations.nctm.org/Lesson.aspx?id=781, for the shorts and shirts activity sheet.
http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3540, for the Bobbie Bear online activity
and http://paperthinpersonas.com/2013/05/29/calculating-clothing-combinations/ for the paper dolls (she has hundreds of different dolls!)
All of these sites are also pinned to my lesson plan Pinterest board, but I haven't found that many that I really love yet! https://www.pinterest.com/alybattenburg/lesson-plans/
